Is This Cheating

I’ve been working remotely from the lake for the past several months.
The work hasn’t stopped.
The responsibilities haven’t changed.
The only thing that’s different…
…is the view.

This morning, I stepped onto the patio with a cup of coffee just as the sun began to rise.
A cool breeze drifted across the lake.
Gentle waves rolled against the shoreline.
Wind chimes echoed softly from somewhere down the cove.
Birds welcomed the morning.

A fish suddenly broke the surface…
…then another.

A mother duck quietly glided across the water with her babies following close behind.

It was one of those mornings that reminds you how much beauty we miss when we’re in too much of a hurry.

For some reason, I remembered I had a wrist blood pressure monitor tucked away in a drawer.
I hadn’t used it in quite a while.
I wasn’t worried.
I was simply curious.

So I slipped it onto my wrist and pressed the button.

As it tightened, I smiled and thought…

“This feels like cheating.”

Shouldn’t I be checking it when life feels hectic?
When the phone won’t stop ringing?
When I’m carrying the weight of everyone else’s needs?

Then it hit me…

Why do we believe the most stressful moments of our lives are the truest measure of how we’re doing?

Maybe they’re not.
Maybe the quiet moments count too.
Maybe they’re the moments we’ve spent a lifetime working toward.

So many people spend decades raising families…
Building careers…
Taking care of parents…
Serving their communities…
Always putting someone else first.

Then one day, life slows down.

And instead of enjoying it…
…they feel guilty.

They wonder if they’ve done enough.
They struggle to sit still.
They feel like they should always be busy.

But what if slowing down isn’t giving up?

What if it’s finally giving yourself permission to enjoy the life you’ve spent years building?

As I sat there watching the sunrise, listening to the waves, and watching those little ducks follow their mom across the lake, I realized something.

Peace isn’t something to apologize for.

It’s something to be grateful for.

So maybe checking my blood pressure while watching the sunrise wasn’t cheating after all.

Maybe it was simply a reminder that some of life’s greatest blessings aren’t found in doing more…
…they’re found in noticing more.

When was the last time you gave yourself permission to simply enjoy the moment you were in?
